  • 2006: We Have Not Yet Begun to Fight
2006 will be a big year for CCPOA members as well as many other employees of the state of California. Coming off of a successful opposition against the Governor's anti-union Propositions, the New Year will include a heavy political re-election year for state government, as well as a struggle with the current administration over the CCPOA-represented BU6 labor contract which is due to expire this year as well.

  • State Officers' Lives in Jeopardy Due to Failure to Replace Body Armor
Correctional Officers have charged that the Schwarzenegger administration is dragging its feet in the movement to replace hundreds of bulletproof vests that the federal government has warned could put law enforcement officers' lives at risk due to a weakness in the Zylon fiber used within the vests. The Japanese fiber is now thought to degrade faster than originally anticipated and would allow bullets and other weapons to penetrate it. The U.S. Department of Justice made this advisory back in August, yet the California Department has only just recently started making moves toward recalling and reissuing vests to officers.

  • California Prisons Face Massive Overcrowding
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced that as of November 16th its population had risen to an all-time high of 167,233 - 195% of its designed capacity. Every week the inmate population grows and breaks never before seen records within the state and at the same time the prison system is seeing an all-time low in vacancies in officer ranks - they are currently understaffed by more than 2,000 officers.

  • Vote NO in November!
The media announced today that less than 60% of Californians are paying attention to Schwarzenegger's Special Election scheduled for November 8th. This is exactly what the Governor's Administration has been hoping for, the chance to receive favorable votes from their core group of supporters - and the silent, misunderstood non-votes of those who should in most cases be against his propositions.

  • Schwarzenegger Announces Plans to Run for Re-Election
Confirming in public what has to be one of the worst kept secrets in political history, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today that he is running for re-election next year in an effort to revitalize his lowered approval ratings and loss of "political momentum." Schwarzenegger told a crowd of approximately 200 guests, "I'm going to follow through with this here. I'm not in there for three years… I'm in there for seven… Yes, I will run for governor!"

    Cold Turkey
  • Tobacco Ban Goes Into Effect - July 1, 2005 - Are you a tobacco user? Then this is not news to you. As of Friday, all tobacco products banned by the Governor at all state institutions. This ban includes all correctional officers, free staff and inmates - so if everyone seems a little edgy in the coming 120-degree weeks out here at Ironwood, you'll understand. Everyone has been forced to go "cold turkey" - ready or not! You may recall the roots of this ban as Schwarzenegger signed it into action from his "smoking tent" on Capitol grounds. But the true irony of his hypocritical ban isn't so much that he puffed on a cigar while signing the ruling, but that the intent of smoke-free institutions is to improve inmate health and reduce taxpayer expenses. How healthy is it to instantly rule that everyone must go cold turkey at the same time? Can you say nicotine fit induced riot? Let's just hope that the free counseling that the state has provided for quitters has a higher success rate on the inside than it typically does on the outside.
