    Correctional Officer's Prayer

Lord, I ask for courage; Courage to face and conquer my own fears... Courage to take me where others will not go.
I ask for strength; Strength of body to protect others... Strength of spirit to lead others.
I ask dedication; Dedication to my job to do it well... Dedication to my community to keep it safe.
Give me, Lord, concern; For all those who trust me... And compassion for those who need me
And, please, Lord, through it all; please be at my side.

    Correctional Officer's Creed

To speak sparingly ... to act not to argue ... to be in authority through personal presence ... to correct without nagging ... to speak with the calm voice of certainty ... to see everything, know what is significant and what not to notice ... to be neither insensitive to distress nor so distracted by pity as to miss what must elsewhere be seen...

To do neither that which is unkind nor self-indulgent in its misplaced charity ... never to obey the impulse or to tongue lash that silent insolence which in times past could receive the lash ... to be both firm and fair ... to know I cannot be fair simply by being firm, nor firm simply by being fair...

To support the reputations of associates and confront them without anger, should they stand short of professional conduct ... to reach for knowledge of the continuing mysteries of human motivation ... to think; always to think ... to be dependable ... to be dependable first to my charges and associates, and thereafter to my duty as employee and citizen ... to keep fit ... to keep forever alert ... to listen to what is meant as well as what is said with words and with silences...

To expect respect from my charges and my superiors yet never to abuse the one for abuses from the other ... for eight hours each working day to be an example of the person I could be at all times ... to acquiesce in no dishonest act ... to cultivate patience under boredom and calm during contusion ... to understand the why of every order I take or give...

To hold freedom among the highest values though I deny it to those I guard ... to deny it with dignity in my example they find not reason to lose their dignity ... to be prompt ... to be honest with all who practice deceit that they not find in me excuse for themselves ... to privately face down my fear that I not signal it ... to privately cool my anger that I not displace it on others ... to hold in confidence what I see and hear which by the telling could harm or humiliate to no good purpose ... to keep my outside problems outside ... to leave inside that which should stay inside ... to do my duty.

    The Corrections Officer's Creed (2)

I walk through the gate of wrought iron, under arbors of razor wire.
The clanging shut of all the gates, is the start of my day.
Wondering some where deep in my mind if I will walk out the same way.

Voices raised in anger, are the first words of my day,
Garbage flying down from the tiers reign upon my head.
Words of hate and ridicule are their daily song.

Why you here boss man? - What did you do wrong?
Not a blessed thing - Human rights are a funny thing,
Guaranteed to us at birth - but as a guard within these walls,
I am sorely hurt, I am spit upon, and cursed out loud.
Have urine thrown upon me - All of this is by the ones,
The government says should not be free.

I guard the lowest of earth's scum, the guilty and the judged.
Who have more rights than me - I spend my life as a free man,
Yet behind these walls of concrete and steel is where I am condemned to be.

And all for the simple reason the inmates can not be freed.
The bleeding hearts and liberal officials value the convict more than me.
I am not a police officer, and often held with distaste.
I go to work everyday, never a prayer is said.
You don't hear the wishes of please be safe.

    No one ever remembers me.
As long as no inmate dies...
    As long as none escapes...
    Don't admit that they exist.
    You can safely sleep
I am there when you least care
    To serve and to protect.

I don't wear the badge so bold, or carry a gun at my side.
I only have my wits with me, to help me to survive.
So when you hear of a corrections officer don't look upon us with disdain.
We are not just security guards - We are the ones that keep this land
    ...from going totally insane.
